Gunmen have attacked the headquarters of Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State, south-east Nigeria, killing three vigilante operatives.
It was gathered that the gunmen who carried out the attack around 2:00am on Thursday, throwing Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) into the council headquarters, destroying properties and setting the buildings ablaze.
Sources from the community told Premium Times that the IEDs razed several buildings in the secretariat.
“They (gunmen) also beheaded one of the vigilante people after killing them,” a source, who asked not to be named, said.
The police spokesperson in Anambra State, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident in a statement on Thursday, saying five of the buildings in the secretariat were set ablaze by the gunmen with the IEDs and some petrol bombs,
“One of the attackers was neutralized,” the police spokesperson said, adding that the presence of the operatives prevented the hoodlums from causing further damage.
The buildings affected by the fire include the administrative block of the council headquarters, a primary healthcare office and an office of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Preium Times reported citing sources in the community,
Others are the office of the National Youth Service Corps, an education office and an office of the National Civil Defense.
