Nigeria’s Federal Government has significantly increased the costs associated with establishing a new private university. The National Universities Commission (NUC) announced on Monday that the processing fee for private universities has risen from N5 million to N25 million.
Abdullahi Ribadu, the head of the NUC, explained that these changes are intended to enhance the quality of private universities in Nigeria. The goal is to ensure that these institutions better serve Nigerian citizens and improve the management of private university education. In a recent report, the NUC stated that it is also updating the regulations for starting private universities.
The aim is to equip newly established institutions to meet the challenges of the 21st century. In line with this initiative and the directive from the Minister of Education, the National Universities Commission has informed promoters of proposed private universities and the general public of the following changes: – The Commission is suspending the processing of all inactive applications, including those of private open universities (i.e., those that have not made any progress on their applications or submitted reports to the Commission for over two years), as well as applications that are still at the stage of submitting Letters of Intent only.
The fee for purchasing application forms for the establishment of a private university has been revised from N1 million to N5 million. Additionally, the processing fee for the application for establishing a private university has been increased from N5 million to N25 million. – The NUC will notify applicants who have already purchased application forms about the revised processing fee of N25 million. These applicants are expected to make their payments within thirty (30) working days to avoid forfeiture of their pending applications.
