Nigeria has confirmed airstrikes on terrorist targets in the North-West, saying it was carried through coordinated security and intelligence cooperation with the United States in its ongoing efforts to combat terrorism and violent extremism in the country.
In a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja, the Federal Government said Nigerian authorities remain actively engaged with international partners, including the United States, to address persistent security threats across the country. The Ministry noted that this collaboration has resulted in “precision hits on terrorist targets in Nigeria by air strikes in the North West.”
The statement explained that the partnership aligns with international practice and bilateral understandings, involving intelligence sharing, strategic coordination, and other forms of support consistent with international law. It added that the cooperation is based on “mutual respect for sovereignty, and shared commitments to regional and global security.”
Separately, the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) confirmed the operation in a post, on X, stating: “At the direction of the President of the United States and the Secretary of War, and in coordination with Nigerian authorities, U.S. Africa Command conducted strikes against ISIS terrorists in Nigeria on Dec. 25, 2025, in Sokoto State.”
Nigeria reiterated that all counter-terrorism actions are guided by the protection of civilian lives, national unity, and respect for the rights and dignity of all citizens, regardless of faith or ethnicity. According to the Ministry, “Terrorist violence in any form whether directed at Christians, Muslims, or other communities remains an affront to Nigeria’s values and to international peace and security.”
The Federal Government added that it will continue to work closely with its partners to weaken terrorist networks, disrupt their financing and logistics, and prevent cross-border threats, while also strengthening Nigeria’s own security institutions and intelligence capabilities. Authorities assured the public that updates would be provided through official channels as engagements with partners continue.
Reacting to the operation, U.S. President Donald J. Trump said the strikes were carried out under his direct authorization. “Tonight, at my direction as Commander in Chief, the United States launched a powerful and deadly strike against ISIS terrorist scum in Northwest Nigeria,” Trump said in a statement shared on social media.
He accused the terror group of targeting civilians and added that the action was intended as a decisive response. “I have previously warned these terrorists that if they did not stop the slaughtering… there would be hell to pay, and tonight, there was,” he said, while commending the U.S. military for what he described as “numerous perfect strikes.”
