Usman Buda, a butcher in Sokoto, was killed on Sunday by his fellow butchers over an alleged blasphemous comment against the Islamic Prophet, Muhammad during an argument Sunday morning.
Buda hails from Gwandu Local Government Area.
According to an witness, a veterinary doctor who gave an account of the incident in a viral audio in Hausa when they started stoning Buda, “he was taken into protective custody by the manager of the market who invited three policemen.
“The police officers had no firearms. Unfortunately, the mob overpowered the police and stoned him to death.”
Confirming the incident, the Sokoto State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Ahmad Rufa’i, said, “A distress call was received at about 09:20 am that one Usman Buda of Gwandu Local Government Area, a butcher at Sokoto Abattoir, allegedly blasphemed the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW) as a result he was mobbed and attacked.
“Upon receiving the information, the Commissioner of Police, Area Commander Metro and DPO Kwanni led a team of policemen and all other operational commanders to the scene.
“On arrival, the mob escaped the scene and left the victim unconscious, where he was rescued and taken to Usmanu Danfodiyo Teaching Hospital Sokoto, for treatment and was later confirmed dead.
“Meanwhile, Investigation is on to arrest the perpetrators and bring them to book.”
In May last year, Deborah Samuel, a student of the Shehu Shagari College of Education, was also stoned to death by her colleagues over alleged blasphemous comment against Prophet Mohammed.
