British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak on Monday appointed former leader David Cameron as foreign minister.
Sunak is reshuffling his cabinet after he fired the interior minister, Suella Braverman following her criticism of the police in the wake of pro-Palestinian protests.
Braverman had last week accused the police of “double standards” at protests, suggesting they were tough on right-wing demonstrators, but easy on pro-Palestinian marchers.
On Saturday, a pro-Palestinian demonstration and a far-right counter protest clashed leading to the arrest of atleast 150 people.
Braverman was replaced by James Cleverly, who had relished his job as foreign minister.
Cameron, who served as British Prime Minister from 2010 to 2016 was ousted from power after his gamble to call a referendum on Britain’s membership of the European Union in 2016 backfired.
Cameron’s return to government suggests that Sunak wanted to bring in more centrist, experienced hands rather than appease the right of his party which supported Braverman.
″We are facing a daunting set of international challenges, including the war in Ukraine and the crisis in the Middle East,” Cameron said in a statement.
“At this time of profound global change, it has rarely been more important for this country to stand by our allies, strengthen our partnerships and make sure our voice is heard.”
