Breaking: Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram back online

Facebook and its apps are gradually coming back online after the company’s worst outage since 2008.

The social media giant’s entire network including WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger were down for over 6 hours.

The outage also affected Facebook’s internal services, with workers reported to be locked out offices.

Facebook had tweeted that it was aware of the issues and was working to resolve it, without offering further explanation.

The cause  of the outage appears to be an internal problem according to Reuters, adding that outside hack was viewed as less likely.

“Something happened internally at Facebook that messed with their network settings on how Facebook talks to the rest of the world and accesses the Internet,” said Courtney Nash, senior research analyst at security company Verica.

Following the outage, Facebook shares fell 4.89% at the close on trading on Monday.
