Nigeria Finishes AFCON Qualifiers Unbeaten

The Super Eagles of Nigeria this evening defeated the Likuena (Crocodiles) of Lesotho at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere, Lagos. With this win, the Super Eagles finished the group qualifiers unbeaten with 4 wins and 2 draws.

The Eagles comprehensively defeated Benin Republic and Lesotho (home and away) while drawing twice with Sierra Leone to finish top of the group with 14 points from 6 games.

The match with the Crocodiles was completely dominated by the Eagles from start to finish with little breakaways by the visiting Likuena. Victor Osimhen opened scoring in the 22nd minute while Oghenekaro Etebo doubled the lead in the second half on the 51st minute. Paul Onuachu who replaced Osimhen on the 74th minute completed the rout on the 83rd minute with a sublime finish.

The Eagles rattled the defence line of the Lesotho national team who would consider themselves very lucky to have gone with such an unbalanced scoreline.

Meanwhile the other final group match between Sierra Leone and Benin Republic, which was to be played simultaneously with the Eagles vs Likuena match, was postponed due to confusions surrounding COVID-19 test results of some Beninois players. CAF is yet to take a position on the date of the match as at press time.

The Super Eagles’ next football action will be in May when they kickstart the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.
