Ike Ekweremadu, the former deputy senate president and his wife Beatrice have been arrested in London and charged to court for organ harvesting.
The Metropolitan Police in London confirmed the arrest on Thursday in a statement. The couple have been charged for conspiring to transport a child a child of unknown age into the UK to harvest organs.
The police said the charges followed an investigation by the Metropolitan Police’s Specialist Crime team. It gave the following details;
“[A] Beatrice Nwanneka Ekweremadu, 55 (10.9.66) of Nigeria is charged with conspiracy to arrange/facilitate travel of another person with a view to exploitation, namely organ harvesting.
“[B] Ike Ekweremadu, 60 (12.05.62) of Nigeria is charged with conspiracy to arrange/facilitate travel of another person with a view to exploitation, namely organ harvesting.
“They have both been remanded in custody and will appear at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court later today.
“The investigation was launched after detectives were alerted to potential offences under modern slavery legislation in May 2022,” the police said.
“A child has been safeguarded and we are working closely with partners on continued support,” it added.
Mr Ekweremadu who has been a senator since 2003, served three terms as Nigeria’s deputy president of the Senate, from 2007 to 2019.
