The sole African to have won a short sprint title at an Olympic Games is South African Reggie Walker, over 100m at the 1908 Games in London.

Tebogo, 21, on Thursday delivered a stunning performance to shock pre-race favourite Naoh Lyles of the United States of America who ended the race in third. He crossed the finish line in an African record of 19.46 to take top spot in a spectacular race in the Stade de France.

Lyles, who won the Olympic 100m title in dramatic fashion on Sunday, was not able to match the impressive pace of Tebogo and will now need to rely on the relays to fulfil his dreams of winning multiple gold medals a these Games.

Kenneth Bednarek of the USA won silver in 19.62 with Lyles taking bronze in 19.70.
